Generic / Chinese displays error 0x04: Throttle not returned to rest

What it means

On Bafang-protocol displays 04 means the throttle did not return to rest ("throttle no homing"). The code is shown as a number on the display.

Likely causes

• Throttle held open at switch-on
• Sticking throttle

Symptoms

• 04 shows
• No assist

How to fix it

1. Let go of the throttle and switch off.
2. Check the throttle springs back freely.
3. Switch the bike off, wait 10 seconds and switch it on again.
4. If the code stays, take the bike to your dealer or an e-bike repair shop.
