Generic / Chinese displays error 04: Throttle not returned to rest

Stop riding. Do not ride with the motor on until the throttle returns to rest.
What it means
On Bafang-protocol displays 04 means the throttle did not return to rest ("throttle no homing"). C961 uses Bafang protocol V4.0; with other controllers codes may differ.
Likely causes
- Throttle held open at switch-on
- Sticking throttle
Symptoms
- 04 flashes
- Motor stops
How to fix it
- Let go of the throttle and switch off.
- Check the throttle springs back freely.
- Switch the bike off, wait 10 seconds and switch it on again.
- If the code stays, take the bike to your dealer or an e-bike repair shop.
