Yamaha error 68: Encoder (motor position sensor) fault

High severity Service soon

Can I ride home with this error?

Ride with caution. Assist is off, but the bike can be pedalled home carefully.

What it means

The drive unit has detected a encoder (motor position sensor) fault and stopped assist. The display alternates the code with 'ENCODER PWR OFF/ON', which tells you to turn the power off and on. The code is stored for the dealer.

Likely causes

  • Motor encoder or its cable fault
  • Temporary electronic fault

Symptoms

  • 'ENCODER PWR OFF/ON' and code 68 on the display
  • Assist stops
  • Red flashing assist lamps on LED displays

How to fix it

  1. Stop in a safe place.
  2. Turn the display power off, wait a few seconds, then turn it on again.
  3. If the code comes back, stop using assist and have the bike checked by a Yamaha e-bike dealer. Do not open the drive unit or battery.
